Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a reliable, vigilant and responsible Security Guard to join its Security Stores team in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing professional security services in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001, Dis-Chem policies and relevant industry standards.

The main purpose of the position is to protect Dis-Chem’s employees, customers, property and assets by maintaining a safe and secure environment, identifying potential criminal activities and responding appropriately to security incidents.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Maintaining constant awareness of the surroundings and identifying suspicious behaviour.
• Conducting regular patrols of the premises to maintain visibility and reduce security risks.
• Monitoring and controlling access to the premises.
• Checking and regulating the entry of employees, suppliers, customers and vehicles.
• Conducting staff, supplier and merchandiser searches where required.
• Performing thorough vehicle searches throughout the day.
• Protecting company property, employees, customers and assets from theft, damage and unlawful activities.
• Investigating signs of damage, unlawful entry or suspicious activities and reporting them to management.
• Maintaining and completing security registers and occurrence books accurately.
• Supervising refuse removal in accordance with Dis-Chem standards.
• Monitoring alarm systems and CCTV cameras where applicable.
• Ensuring that doors and windows are properly secured during closing procedures.
• Reporting unusual or suspicious behaviour immediately.
• Contacting police, emergency services or other relevant authorities when required.
• Providing assistance during emergencies and evacuation procedures.
• Maintaining order at assembly points during emergencies.
• Preparing detailed written reports following incidents or security-related events.
• Providing security and safety advice to employees and other relevant persons.
• Remaining vigilant and responding quickly and appropriately to dangerous or emergency situations.
• Enforcing site rules and regulations to prevent criminal activity.
• Performing additional security-related duties according to company procedures.

Essential:

• Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate.
• Grade C accreditation with PSIRA.
• At least 3 years’ general exposure in the retail industry, such as shopping malls or warehouses.

Advantageous:

• At least 1 year of previous experience in a similar security role.
• Knowledge of security procedures and industry practices.
• A third language.

Applicants should have:

• Knowledge of PSIRA requirements.
• Fire emergency and relevant Health & Safety training/exposure.
• Good English reading, writing and speaking skills.
• Strong observation and alertness.
• Good communication skills.
• Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
• Professional customer service skills.
• Ability to work responsibly and maintain confidentiality.

Applicants must:

• Be PSIRA registered.
• Hold Grade C PSIRA accreditation.
• Be a South African citizen.
• Successfully undergo MIE screening, including criminal and credit checks.
• Have a driver’s licence and own reliable transport where applicable.
• Have a PDP when deployed as a driver.
